MAKING WAY FOR THE GAMECHANGERS

CAST eMAGAZINE

I have had the opportunity to be a collaborator in the latest installment of Cast eMag issue #2 and let me tell you it's been quite an eye opener to not only write for Mick Guthrie and Fish Army but to also see the up and coming talent in this industry for writing as much as talent on the water it's self. Collaborating writers include Scott Whitfield, Kurt Kiggins, Joel Edwards, Stuart Kenny and more.... Get hold of it at www.castemag.com available on your smart phone, tablet and computer loaded with special content only seen here, amazing photography and articles.

LATE SEASON WARMER FOR SALMON

FIRST SALMON FOR THE SEASON

Sydney has had a very warm start of winter and the temperature in late May was still averaging around 25 degrees making the water temp of around 21-22 degrees, so the Salmon haven't really made a show along the southern East coast yet, except a few scattered stranglers here and there along the ledges.

I had upgraded my hook setup on DUO's Pressbait 85 lure to gain a better hookup to miss ratio with two assist hooks as I always find that salmon and even Tailor and Bonito will follow a lure right to the ledge striking at the lure the whole time but just missing the hooks. This way it gives just that little bit more confidence in a fish striking at reaching the hook setup.

I went out last weekend for a few hours before the wind picked up and started to blow 25knots. It was definitely a very slow day with few people fishing for Drummer and Luderick from the ledge with no real luck at all.

Although there was hardly any Salmon around I managed to land one in the few hours we had on the water and the first for the season with hopefully a crackin' season ahead. I will be targetting a few Salmon from my boat on the fly in the coming months.

ESTUARY BOUND

BREAD AND BUTTER

I have been back down to basics lately as the seas have been up coupled with the wind blowing above 20 knots most days. So fishing the Flats for Bream, Whiting and Flathead if I can ever get through the copious amounts of standard winter rat Tailor.

Here is a few photos from the last couple of weeks...

Jessi and I with some well over average Bream from the washes

Recently Spooled some new reels with some super smooth braid from Toray Japan

Moared Salt Pan cove along the flats where roaming Stingrays were circling the boat \

MOVING FORWARD WITH EDGE RODS

Latest in Rod Technology

Today I tested out a new rod from from Gary Loomis's new range, Edge Rods. These rods are nothing but precision, built with the highest grade of graphite material offered by North Fork Composites.
After using this rod I came to the conclusion that the 703 rod is "The lightest, most crisp and sensitive rod I have had in my hands to date"

I used a variety of different styles and lures today with this rod, from surface pencil's and popper's through to shad minnows, vibes and plastics all with the same outcome... Sensitivity. The extra fast taper in the ISR 703 model allows the angler to twitch surface lures with ease, just the slightest tweak of the tip puts out a perfect response to the lure without having to jerk the tip to much and allowing the angler to focus more on the retrieve. The soft tip alerts the angler of the slightest bump or bite in the lure, this kind of sensitivity will assist any angler and provide them with the maximum action throughout the retrieve.

Using plastics with this rod I was amazed at the response from the blank, the slightest brush of the plastic from a submerged log or structure in the water was immediately transferred through the blank, acting in tune with the innovative graphite butt of the rod right through to my hands.
I have some deal of success on vibes lures for Flathead, Bream, Golden Perch, and various other species but I rely on the bite reaction. I found that while working vibe lures back through the water you can clearly sense the vibration from them.
Any movement through the line immediately transfers directly back into your hand even the slightest movement of the rod tip. Such sensitivity will give comfort in the angler for turning that quick bite reaction around, and will allow you to set the hook fast and eliminate losing any counteraction.

The Black Widow handle is 100% carbon fiber that reacts extremely more responsive to the standard cork and foam grips commonly used in rod builds. The Edge 703 is built with the latest in guide trains and features REC's titanium recoil guides, so light the reduction in weight loss is incredible that just adds to the performance and craftsmanship that is offered in this range of rods.

SOUTHERN BOUND FOR MURRAY COD

Lake Mulwala

Lake Mulwala
36.0000° S, 146.0833° E

Over the Easter break I was able to get some much needed time away to visit family in Victoria and of course I had fishing in mind as I packed Baitcasters and Cod lures.
I grew up in country Victoria through to my mid teens catching Redfin and Carp in the local waterways. I hadn't been back with a rod since and thought I was long overdue.

An insight beneath the depths of Mulwala.

I Headed out to Lake Mulwala to have a view of the magnificent fishery the place holds, being one of the best fisheries for large healthy Murray Cod and backdrops of timber like a car park, what else could you want. I introduced myself to the locals at Lake Mulwala Fish Camp and Ski Tackle store across the bridge on the lake and got chatting.

Murray Cod on DUO Crank M65 11A

The kind folk at the store had gun local fisho and Bassman Spinnerbait Cod angler Jamie Stewart take me out for a few hours in the afternoon for some needed Cod whacking. Casting at the merging timber in the lake in search for some Cod was a tough ordeal, as many fisho's know fishing is sometimes tough even though the key elements and fundamentals are in right order.

Very healthy models stocked in Mulwala.

As the sun began to fall and the cold was setting in, the Cod were lazy and much to my knowledge just didn't wanna feed until we managed to land some healthy models in the 6 and 700mm. Real healthy and well fed fish I may add, along with the fishing and quality Cod available here I must say the terrain in incredible, there is literally tens of thousands of old dead trees, some still standing, some submerged in the depths, but a perfect habitat for any ambush feeding species. Let's not fail to mention the amazing Autumn sunset along the horizon making the end of the day a most remembering one.

Amazing Sunsets on the Lake

In four hours Cod were boated and Cod were dropped and I must say I am now on a mission to return to Mulwala for a real go at this impoundment. I have unfinished business with these blokes...... Until then, Enjoy......

Visit the very kind and very knowledgeable people down at Lake Mulwala Fish Camp and Ski Tackle store at: 74 Melbourne St Mulwala (03) 5744 3133 for a shop that is decked with Cod Lures from Floor to ceiling.
Have a look at them on Facebook

Very Special thanks to Jamie Stewart for the opportunity on the water, very much appreciated.
